As a fundamental study to develop a lavender fragrance detector, changes in electronic characteristics (impedance Z and resonant frequency f) of a quartz resonator for exposure to lavender fragrance were determined. The surface of the resonator was coated by Japan (urushi) as a film adsorbing lavender fragrance molecules. The maximum value of the impedance change rate DZ/Z of the resonator was 4.5x10 -2 when it was exposed to air saturated in lavender fragrance molecules. On the other hand, the maximum frequency change rate was Df / f considered to be smaller than 2.8x10 -7 . The experiment result suggested that using the impedance change, rather than the frequency change, of the quartz resonator could lead to the lavender fragrance detector.
