Most qigong masters produce low frequency sound from their hands while emitting qi. This sound was reproduced in a 'qigong simulator' which is effective at treating some of the conditions for which emitted qi treatments are effective. Study of this device has led to an understanding of how emitted qi alters consciousness, and to a mechanism of qigong healing.
An analyzer was built which measures the trembling of hands, which correlates with EEG except differs in some ways. Individuals tremble at differing frequencies depending on their mode of consciousness:
Those motivated by fear and instinct tremble between 0 and 4 Hertz, the Delta rhythm.
Those motivated by attachment and desire tremble between 4 and 8 Hertz, The Theta rhythm.
Those motivated by service tremble between 8 and 14 Hz, the Alpha rhythm, the frequency range emitted by qigong masters.
Those motivated by organization and planning tremble between 14 and 22 Hertz.
As put forth by the Buddha 2500 years ago, attachment and desire are the source of great human suffering. This is associated with the Theta rhythm between 4 and 8 Hertz.
And as those suffering from nervous overload will testify, excess thinking causes suffering as well. This is the Beta range between 14 and 22 Hertz.
The sound of emitted qi produced by the simulator, when applied to a test subject, is observed, at first, to increase trembling at all frequencies, then to cause a shift toward the Alpha rhythm. After treatment is stopped, trembling at all frequencies calms way down to below initial trembling amplitude, and the peak trembling frequency is shifted toward the Alpha range. In the process, the subject experiences deep relaxation and clarity of mind, in addition to relief from chronic pain and other symptoms associated with 'low qi'.
Thus, it appears that the infrasonic sound produced by qigong masters is effective because it causes decreased trembling in the Theta and Beta ranges. This simultaneously decreases attachments and desires (calming the emotions), and reducing excess thinking (calming the mind), thereby freeing the patient's vital resources to be redirected toward healing
The common Western wisdom is that, if a patient concentrates his mind on healing and really wants to get better, he will accelerate recovery. This research suggests just the opposite: When the patient stops thinking and wanting, and enters Alpha, characterized by activity and service, his healing will be accelerated, often with apparently miraculous results.
