Preface:

Up to now, manned space flight has developed enormously in U.S.A. (United states of America) and U.S.S.R (The Union of Soviet Socialist Republic). It is know that there are a lot of medical problems to be resolved in the manned space flight. The change of blood pressure in micro-gravity during manned space flight is just one of them. In the last few years it has been reported that master of Gigong can regulate blood pressure themselves with qigong. Masters of qigong can increase blood pressure when his blood pressure is lower than normal and he can also decrease it when it is higher than normal. We have been studying the problem for a long time a more papers dealing with this subject.

At the moment, bed-rest is the best method simulating micro-gravity environment.

The aims of this paper are as follows:

1: Observation on the directing regulation effect of master's qigong blood pressure themselves with qigong. We use the method that masters of qigong regulate blood pressure themselves up---down---up---down---up---down (three up---down) continuously with their thought.

2: We also study the regulating effect on blood pressure of master of qigong themselves with qigong during bed-rest for 24 hours. And we want to find out a law of the regulating blood pressure.

In general we will provide the possibility and the base of modes ling test of astronauts utilizing qigong, to show that astronauts may improve the changes of blood pressure themselves in micro-gravity with qigong.

Method

1: We chose 58 subjects who consist of 17 masters of qigong, 22 exercising people and 19 people in comparison, their ages are statistically of no significant difference. The masters of qigong have exercised Jing Gong more than 5 years. The time of studying qigong in the exercising group is from several months to less than 5 years, and the controls have not any qigong. We use model UA--251 electro digital sphygmomameter for measuring blood pressure and used the method of 'three up---down blood pressure.' The duration of either per up or down is 2 minutes.

2. The bed-rest test was in the bed and subjects were head lower position (-4 degrees) for 24 hours. The 23 subjects have exercising 'Nei Yang Gong' et al. for more than 2 years. They had not drinking any wine and medicine that can influence the blood pressure for 24 hours before bed-rest test.

The subjects were divided into two groups during the bed test. Time of the first group is from 13 P.M. first day to 20 P.M. next day. While the subjects were sleeping we stopped measuring the blood pressure. After the test work was finished the subjects get up and had a short rest for about 2 hours. In that time, however, they did not do any sharp activities and bad not a great deal of food and drink.

Results and Analysis

There are was follows:

1: The possible observation on regulating blood pressure with qigong.

The three group changes of sum of systolic and diastolic blood pressure (sum of differences of S and Sum of differences of D) in sitting and supine position during status of qigong are shown in Table 1.

In table 1, you can see that sum of differences of S and sum of differences of D of the group of the master of qigong has significant increasing than other two groups. The sum of differences of S of group E increased significantly only as compared with group C in sitting position during qigong and the other did not.

Table 1. Three groups' sum of differences of S and sum of differences of D

sum of differences of S sum of differences of D
sitting supine sitting supine

8.0 *** 3.2 * 3.9 *** 2.0 *
M (60) (24) (39) (15)

3.2 ^^^ 1.1 0.3 1.1
E (24) (8) (2) (8)

0.1 ### 0.1 ## -0.3 ### 0.1 #
C (1) (1) (-2) (1)

M : Group of master of qigong
E : Group of exercising qigong
C : Group of no qigong
M : C # p < 0.05, ## p < 0.01, ### p < 0.001
M : E * p < 0.05, ** p < 0.01, *** p < 0.001
M : C ^ p < 0.05, ^^ p < 0.01, ^^^ p < 0.001

The result means the skill (Gong Fu) of Group M is higher than Group of E and C. The Group of C, however, has not any (Gong Fu).

In general, the Group M can regulate blood pressure themselves with qigong. But the regulation is through thought of the master of qigong on special body part of 'Bai Hui' or 'Tong Quan' directly.

2: The regulation effects of qigong on the blood pressure during head down bed rest (-4 degrees) for 24 hours are shown in table 2. and Table 3. They are a follows:

Table 2. The first group's changes of differences of systolic plus differences of diastolic (dS+dD in table) and the regulation volume (R.V.) with qigong. [Kpa (mm Hg)]

time of bed-rest (hour)
0 4 8 12 16 20 24

0.0 -0.7 -0.5 -0.8 -0.7 -0.9
(dS+dD) (0) (-5) (-4) (-6) (-5) (-7)

To the date of changing mean * p < 0.05, ** p < 0.01, *** p < 0.001. (following like this)

Table 3 Second group's changes of differences in systolic plus differences in diastolic (written dS+dD in table) and the R.V. with qigong [Kpa (mm Hg)]

time of bed-rest (hour)
0 4 8 12 16 20 24

0.0 -0.4 -1.7 -1.9 -0.1
dS+dD (0) (-3) (-13) (-14) (-1)

3.3 2.0** 2.0* 3.2
R.V. (25) (15) (15) (24)

From Table 2. , we can see that qigong's regulation effect on the blood pressure is higher than the changes of (dS+dD) in the first group in the bed-rest of head down (-4 degrees) period at 4-th, 8-th, 16-th, 20-th and 24-th hour respectively. As shown in the Table 3 the second group's is also the same.

As having been said before Table 2 and Table 3, the masters of qigong of two groups can regulate blood pressure themselves during bed-rest with qigong directly and the regulation volume is higher than sum of changing volume the systolic and diastole blood pressure during the bed-rest significantly. From what is seen above, we think that the changes ranges of blood pressure of astronauts from 1.1 to 2.7 Kpa in microgravity can be regulated by exercising qigong themselves .

Conclusions

The main results can be concluded as follows:

1. In this paper, the changes of blood pressure with 58 cases have been observed during functional status of qigong .

The results showed that the thought from the masters of qigong and exercising qigong caused the significant directional changes of blood pressure themselves in the sitting and the supine position .

The blood pressure may increase when the masters of qigong thought the point of 'Bai Hui' and decrease when the masters of qigong thought the point of 'Yong Quan' during the functional status of qigong. So the work indicated qigong has the effect of directional adjustment on the blood pressure.

The changes of sum of differences of systolic blood pressure regulated by the masters of qigong were about 8.0 and 3.2 Kpa (60 and 24 MM Hg) in the sitting and supine position respectively. But the sum of differences of diastolic were 3.9 and 2.0 Kpa (29 and 15 mm Hg) in the sitting and supine position respectively.

2. We have also studied the ability that 23 male masters of qigong regulated the blood pressure themselves with the qigong during the bed rest for 24 hours. The results showed that the range from 1.1 to 2.7 Kpa blood pressure changes of astronauts in microgravity can be regulated by exercising qigong . This finding has great significance in developing the special aspect of Space Medicine of China .
