50-case study of Jing qigong to correct and cure short-sightedness Author: Xue Huiqin Affiliation: Dept of Medical Engineering, Xi’an Medical University, Xi'an, China [1] Conference/Journal: 2nd Int Conf on Qigong Date published: 1989 Other: Pages: 118 , Word Count: 874 At present it is relatively common that more and more young boys and girls are becoming shortsighted. From the result of the health investigation for the students of the whole country in 1985, we know that the visual power of the students are dropping down seriously. The average poor eyesight for the Han nationality students is 34.26%. Among the 28 province, municipality and autonomous regions, in 18 the average poor eyesight for students is between 30% and 40% ,and that in 3 provinces is between 40% and 50%. Jing Qigong is one of the relatively effective methods for young students to correct faulty vision and relieve fatigue of optic nerve. The author has done some work in this field with some exciting curative effects. Following is the report of the result: I. Material From July 1987 to March 1988, in selected middle and primary schools in Xian, 96 eyes in 50 cases were selftreated with Jing Qigong, in which 35 eyes in 18 male cases and remaining 61 eyes in 32 female cases, the age arranges are 4 cases below 10 years, 44 cases between 10 and 15 years and 2 in 18 years. Before treatment, all 50 cases had measurement of eyesight without glasses, after self-treated with Jing Qigong for two weeks, they had another measurement of eyesight without glasses. Generally, their eyesights are improved in different degrees. II. Method of Treatment For two weeks, the students were taut the skills of 9-act Jing Qigong: l. Zhan Zhuang (standing quietly like a post) 2. Qi Guan Wulun (vital energy reaches 5 sections of body). 3. Xue Wei Anmo (massage on the body points) 4. Yanqu Faqi (release vital energy around eyes) 5. Tuila Kaihe (pull and push movement) 6. Yunsu Yangshen (move the eyes in repose) 7. Zhuanjing Dengmu (move the neck and stare at nothing) 8. Shugan Limu (motivate the function of liver and better the vision) 9. Daoqi Guiyuan (conduct energy and restore vitality) These acts are learned for three days. The fourth day another 7-act Anmu Jian Naogong are taught: l. Longfa Shu Tou (touch the head and comb the hair) 2. Gan Calian (rub the face with dty hands) 3. Anrou Brlun (touch and massage the ear) 4. Anrou Jingsiang (touch and massage the neck) 5. Anrou Fengehi (touch and massage the neck) 6. Ji Tiangu (beat Fengehi point) 7. Sai Brkong (obstruct ears with fingers) This is required three times per day for self-practice, teachers give coaches every other day. As soon as they completed half-hour treatment of 'Jing Qigong' and 'Anmo Jian Naogong,' they were comfortable, spirit energetic and eyes brighter. When students do Jing Qigong, they must to be relaxed and calm. Relaxation means to relax the whole body, all muale relaxed and in normal state, whole body harmonious. The relaxation of the heart let the outside interest be suppressed and the interest of all kinds action in body be improved, that is mind remaining in body. Calm can regulate physiological function state of qigong and vital energy be free. With corresponding action and 'Yinian' force, we can improve the blood circulation of the eyes, nerve nutrition and shed tear. After the action of 'Shugan Limu' has been done, the part of liver feel heat, bloated, dull pain, soon these feelings will disappear and feeling of comfortable will come. III. Data Processing and Typical Examples The following table uses some methods in statistics for values before and after treatment. The following things are calculated: average value d-bar, variable and (sigma-d), norminal difference , nominal error and reciprocal, (n), value t, from table of value t, value p can be calculated. The effect after two weeks treatment age 10 years 10-15 years 18 years eyes left right left right left right d-bar 0.4 0.3 0.231 0.244 0.10. 0.05 sigma-d 1.6 1.2 10.16 10.74 0.2 0.1 n 4 4 44 44 2 2 t 2.53 2.788 7.333 9.2424 1 p <0.5 <0.5 <0.05 <0.05 <<0.001 <0.5 From the table, it is seen that 'Jing Qiging' is effective to correct faulty vision. For 10-15 year old group, P<0.05, so it is thought to be effective. But because the samples are limited for that below ten (4 persons) years old and 18-years old samples (2 persons), it is thought to be no use in statistics viewpoint. Generally, after 2-week course treatment, the visual power of the children who are practicing qigong can be improved 2-3 code lines in vision test chart, and some individuals can do still better. For example, Miss Guo,12 years old, in 2nd class, Grade 6 in an elementary school of Sian Xiaczhai, practised qigong 3 tines each day for two weeks time and vision of her right eye improved from 0.8 to 1.6 (the vision of her left eye was 1.5 already). Miss Qi,12 years old, in 2nd class, Grade 6 in an elementary school of Shaanxi Normal University practiced qigong 3 times each day for 2 weeks time and the vision of her right eye improved iron 0.2 to 0.7 and the left from 0.6 to 1.2. For most Of the youngsters, the short-sighted belongs to the required type due to overburden of eyes working to keep the crystal lens regulating all the time and make the musculus ciliaris fatigue and spasm and as a result, the false shortsighted is formed. If these cases can be timely and properly treated with Jing Qigong the blood circulation of eyes, the nerve nutrition and body tissue metabolism can be improved, musculus ciliaris is relaxed. In doing so, the spasm of musculus ciliaris con be removed, the regulation ability of eye balls improved and thus to satisfy the need of purpose of restoring the vision.
