A Pilot Study of Electroencephalography Changes Associated with Ki Author: Koizumi H Affiliation: The Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, USA Conference/Journal: 2nd World Congress Qigong Date published: 1998 Other: Pages: 42 , Word Count: 295 The Objective of the Study: The objective of the study is to gain a better understanding of the therapeutic use of ki energy by measuring changes in electroencephalography of the ki-master and the ki-recipient during ki-emission. Statement: Although the effectiveness of ki-therapy is now well known, the mechanism behind the therapeutic effect of ki is not still well understood. Recent years, however, have seen a surge of experimental studies which try to measure ki 'objectively', including those based on electroencephalography (Fujiki. 1987, and Shinagawa, 1990), electromagnetic waves (Gy 1989), and ultrasonic waves, infrasonic waves, and infrared rays (Gu and Lin, 1989). Hypothesis: The hypothesis to be tested in this study is: 1. The ki-master's electroencephalography during ki transmission is significantly different from that in his/her ordinary awake state; 2. The transmission of ki energy by the ki-master causes changes in the recipient’s electroencephalography without physical contact; 3. There exists 'synchronization' of electroencephalography between the ki-master and the recipient during ki-emission; and 4. The therapeutic effect of ki-therapy is associated with changes in electroencephalography which reflect underlying neurophysiological changes in the recipient. Design of the Study: The subjects of the study are: a ki-master who has practiced ki more than 30 years and three people who have never practiced ki. Each subject will be hooked to a 16 channel electroencephalographic monitor. The first test is to monitor electroencephalographic changes in the ki-master and the three recipients at their awake and resting states. The second test is to monitor changes in electroencephalography in the ki-master and three recipients when the ki-master emits ki-energy. Analysis of the Data: Each electroencephalography will be analyzed to see if the hypotheses are supported. This is done by looking at the pattern as well as the frequency and distribution of brain waves. Topographic analysis of data will also be conducted.
