  • Dr. Chen at WISH Receives NIH Grant
    Dr. Chen at WISH received a major NIH grant to study therapeutic effect of qigong therapy on osteoarthritis at knees with master Binhui He. Patients with OA of knees are needed for the study.

    Dr. Chen, research director of Qigong Institute, just received a major NIH research grant of $300,000 for two years to conduct a clinical study of qigong therapy for osteoarthritis at knees. This is probably the largest grant NCCAM has ever given for studying the therapeutic effect of external qigong therapy for patients. This dual-blinded randomized trial with placebo control will recruit 100 subjects of osteoarthritis (OA) at the knees to investigate the clinical effectiveness of external Qi therapy (EQT) for pain relief and symptom improvement in patients with OA at the knees. Master Binhui He will be the key qigong healer in this trial. This is the first major qigong grant Dr. Chen and Master He received from NIH. The clinical trial will formally start in December of 2004, and Dr. Chen is actively recruiting subjects for this study. People with OA at knees who are interested in this clinical study may contact Dr. Chen at chenke@umdnj.edu .

    The study will include 5 treatment sessions, each lasting about 10 to 15 minutes, over the course of 2 weeks. There will be a final session 3 months after the last treatment to do a follow-up exam and evaluation. The first and second sessions will take about 60 minutes, because of paperwork and research-related measurements. You may remain on your current medication during the study. There will no cost from the study participants. As the matter of fact, the patient will receive a small payment for each completed session, with a total up to US$120 being paid to each participant for the completed study (5 treatment sessions plus the very important follow-up session).

    In order to enter the study you must be between age 18 and 75 and have been diagnosed with knee arthritis at least 6 months before entry into the study. However, you should not participate in this study if you have any one of the following conditions:
    1) You are unable to understand English;
    2) Have arthritis in more than 5 joints
    3) Have started on a new pain-killer or arthritis drugs within the last two weeks of the study.
    4) Have been diagnosed with fibromyalgia (unexplained pain at multiple locations or other complicated spondylosis (spinal arthritis) at this time
    5) Have received any investigational drug in the last 30 days (before the study);
    6) Have inflammatory joint disease such as rheumatoid arthritis or degenerative disk disease.
    7) Started having the pain that was diagnosed as OA less than 6 months ago.

    For more information about this study, please call Kara Moeller at 732-235-3453 or email to Dr. Chen at chenke@umdnj.edu .
