Physics and the Non-Biological Basis of Life

The Non-Biological Basis of Life

Western medical science is founded on the model that the basis of life is biological where biomolecular processes and biochemistry describe function. However, each cell in the body gives off and receives different kinds of energy -- heat, light, vibration, magnetism, and electricity. Historically, Western medicine has considered these different types of bioenergy phenomena as byproducts of normal cellular function instead of recognizing them as intrinsic to the function. In fact, much research indicates that the energetic side controls the biological.

Emerging fields like epigenetics (see Epigenetics, Psychoneuroimmunology, and Qigong), biophotonics, biophysics, quantum biology, and frequency therapy as well as more established fields like neuroscience, quantum mechanics, and cellular biology have research results that prove that energy is just as fundamental to life as biology. This should come as no surprise since In 1905 Einstein published the Special Theory of Relativity which proved the equivalence of mass and energy (E=mc2), which means that human beings are 50 percent biological, and the other 50 percent is overlapping fields of energy. Interestingly, "wu li" ("organic patterns of energy") is Chinese for "physics".

Western medical science has embraced energy (aka bioenergy, energy medicine, mind-body, frequency medicine, frequency therapy) medicine for diagnosis (see Energy Technologies and Therapies for more information). However, bioenergy is not fully embraced for treatment or prevention of illness. Fortunately, this is slowly changing with the growing acceptance of the moving meditation practices of Qigong and Tai Chi, and technology-based frequency therapy. There are especially profound implications for energy-based non-invasive diagnostics and cures in the 21st Century.

Not only is every cell in the body transmitter and receiver of electromagnetic information, it is these electromagnetic frequencies that preceed and correspond to biological functions. Measuring Biophoton Activity in Humans

During the last thirty years the Rhine Research Center’s Bio-Emissions experiment has been measuring people for charge accumulation and electromagnetic bio-emissions. These measurements are being used to study bio-energy healers, meditators and people who claim unusual effects on electrical equipment. Cindy Cicero, Director and Instructor for the School of Chi Energy Heals, participated in one such experiment at the Rhine Center’s Bio-Emissions Lab in Durham, NC. which is described in the video below.

The equipment used to measure bio-emissions are several special devices. A thermoelectric cooler detector measurement device is cooled to 30 degree centigrade so the baseline will be low. The baseline is an average of all individuals who participated in the experiment. Then it is the photomultiplier tube that measures biophotons. When one photon of light strikes this sensitive surface it dislodges several other electrons. The dislodged electrons accelerate striking many more electrons that cause a change reaction event.

Biophotonics

Biophotons are light created by cells. As early as the 1920's a Russian researcher discovered that living tissue gave off photons. This discovery was too much for orthodox cell biologists to handle, so it took until the 1970's for German researchers, namely Fritz Popp, to replicate and expand upon this work. The resulting biophoton theory  postulates that the light which is given off by DNA serves as the body's main communication and regulatory network. More recent research has confirmed that DNA does in fact give off magnetic waves corresponding to biophotons¹. Biophotons then, provide an explanation for the physical basis of life that is not biologically based. It is based on bioenergy. Biophoton theory also postulates a web, or hologram, of light created by the constant emitting and absorbing of photons by DNA, cells, tissues, and organs and proteins. This hologram would correspond to auras and other energy matrices that have been part of eastern philosophy and traditions for millennia. An energetic matrix would also explain basic morphology, or cell differentiation.

In recognition of the importance of biophotons, the National Science Foundation created the Center for Biophotonics Science and Technology at the University of California at Davis in 2002. In 2011, the Center's status was updated to a National Biophotonic Sensors and Systems Center. Research will be carried out in collaboration with industry sponsors and the Boston University Photonics Center. According to the press release,  "working at the intersection of photonics engineering and the life sciences, the center will focus on translational research where photonics provides the technologies for advances in methods to detect and identify biological properties, conditions or changes at the molecular, cellular and sub-cellular levels."

interview with Fritz-Albert Popp, Founder of the International Institute of Biophysics in Neuss, Germany.

An electromagnetic field produces a pattern. Photons are single units of this field. The pattern is not just in a locality. It is a space-time pattern. "This spatial dynamical pattern provides the information of the cell, and it tells the cell what it has to do at what time and what place."

On the video they say over 100,000 reactions occur in each cell each second. Other sources say one million reactions occur in each cell in the body ervery second¹. Obviously these reactions are occurring biologically. But what is controlling and coordinating the reactions? Popp argues that proper function requires speed of light signalling. It cannot be done through chemical means.

It also requires a coherent light. The predictability and stability of the pattern is a measure of coherence.

"The coherence time of the best laser is about one-tenth of a second but the coherence time of biological system[s] is at least in the order of days, or even weeks. So you have a very very high degree of coherence. And this allows the biological system to communicate with the highest possible clearness."

"A chemical reaction can only happen if the molecule which is reacting is excited by a photon. A photon is necessary to stimulate a molecule to a chemical reaction."

Photons are autocatalytic messengers, meaning that they are self-sustaining catalysts for cascading reactions, without losing their coherence/energy to heat. Thus, the electromagnetic field itself, the space-time pattern, is the coherent source of the information necessary to regulate cellular metabolism. This non-biological basis of life iteslf explains cellular functioning since through epigenetics it is clear that DNA and the genome have no part in initiating any cellular chemical reactions except to replace or regenerate certain proteins required by the reactions (see Epigenetics, Psychoneuroimmunology, and Qigong).

Quantum Mechanics and Qigong

"The Universe is one indivisible, dynamic whole in which energy and matter are so deeply entangled it is impossible to consider them as independent elements." Bruce Lipton. Biology of Belief.

Quantum Mechanics is concerned with the intereaction of energy and matter. Philosophical Taoism, Buddhism, and Confucianism blended together in China two thousand years ago to form the basis of what is known today as Qigong (for more background on ancient Chinese physics, qi, and Qigong, see Subtle Energies and Uncharted Realms of the Mind). Both Qigong and quantum mechanics go beyond biology to explain reality, or the basis of function and life. According to Qigong and quantum mechanics, the basis of reality is energy. The following chart highlights some of the convergence of Eastern thought and Western science. Physicists are leading the way in the scientific understanding and characterization of the core principles of Qigong. The practice of Qigong enables one to embrace reality -- the unadulterated, unfiltered experience of life as it unfolds moment to moment.

Dependent origination = self organizing = chaos theory = physics of qigong

Feynman or "vacuum diagram" - From "empty space" comes something  and then it disappears back into empty space. Matter appears out of thin air, and then disappears.

It is not possible according to our usual conceptions for "something" to come out of "empty space"; but, at the subatomic level, it does - Dancing W-Li Masters, page 267. Physicists extract light from seeming emptiness.

"wu li" = organic patterns of energy. Nothing is separate. According to physics, everything is a web of relationships between elements. There is nothing but space-time and motion, and they are the same thing.

The idea that objects exist apart from event is part of the epistemological net with which we snare our particular form of experience. This idea is dear to us because we have accepted it, without question, as the basis of our reality. It profoundly influences how we see ourselves. It is the root of our inescapable sense of separateness from others and environment - Dancing Wu Li Masters, Page 279.

Bell's Theorem: separate parts of the universe are connected in an immediate way. The results of Bell's experiment are said to have shown that subatomic particles that are far apart are able to communicate in ways that cannot be explained by the transfer of physical signals traveling at or slower than the speed of light. Many physicists regard these 'nonlocal' connections as absolutely instantaneous.

Bohm: implicate order: There is an unbroken wholeness at the most fundamental level.

ZPF - The Zero Point Field is the empty vacuum of space that is uniform and isotropic (the same in all directions) which is why it is so hard to detect and observe. The ZPF consists of enormous residual background energy (ZPE or Zero Point Energy) which, according to classical physics, is brought into existence (form) by the laws of Quantum Mechanics.

Stochastic Electrodynamics goes a step further than Quantum Mechanics and postulates that the ZPF is real and is as fundamental as the universe itself.

Buddhism: Dependent origination

Taoism: wu-wei - being spontaneous and letting everything follow its natural course, the way of nature (the Tao)

"You function by happening, that is to say, by spontaneous occurrence." Alan Watts.

At the quantum level, the wave function (the possibilities that can happen to an observed system) are described by probabilities that are a function of chance.

Coherence and Entrainment

The bioenergetic basis of life is comprised of overlapping, interacting energy fields. Coherence (constructive interference) and entrainment are terms used to describe the interaction and synchronization of the fields. Body function and well-being depends upon the degree of coherence which is reflected in the Heart Rate Variability (HRV). HRV is an indicator of Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) function. Generally speaking, relaxation and regeneration occurs when the ANS is in parasympathetic (highly coherent, or entrained) mode. Qigong moving meditation creates coherence and entrainment of body systems and cells.

The body generates electromagnetic fields of varying intensities. The heart generates a field many times greater than that of the brain. The electromagnetic fields of people have been measured from as far as six feet away using SQUIDS. This gives a real physical meaning to the term "charisma." Science is just beginning to investigate the properties of these fields. They have been part of energetic medicine and eastern spiritual and wellness practices for millenia. Different names refer to different parts or combinations of the fields, such as aura, chakra, dantien, meridians, and others.

The Institute of Heart Math is the first organization to systematically research human coherence and entrainment and make that research known to a wide audience. The Institute's mission is researching the link between emotions, heart-brain communication, and cognitive function. Just as oscillators provide the timing for computers, coordination of body function via rhythms such as heart beat and respiration are described by coherence and entrainment. The following summary is from the Heart Math website.

The term coherence is used to describe two or more waves (or systems) that are either phase- or frequency-locked. This is also called entrainment. In the coherent mode, respiration, heart rhythms, and blood pressure rhythms become entrained and oscillate at the same frequency. The term cross-coherence is used to specify this type of coherence. Note that this use of the term coherent is different than its use to describe coherent waves, which are man-made concentrated radiation that can harm biological organisms.

Physiological Coherence: A state characterized by:

  • High heart rhythm coherence ((sine wave-like rhythmic pattern)
  • Increased parasympathetic activity
  • Increased entrainment and synchronization between physiological systems
  • Efficient and harmonious functioning of the cardiovascular, nervous ,hormonal and immune systems
An exchange of electromagnetic energy produced by the heart occurs when people touch or are in proximity. Signal averaging techniques are used to show that one's electrocardiogram (ECG) signal is registered in another person's electroencephalogram (EEG) and elsewhere on the other person's body. While this signal is strongest when people are in contact, it is still detectable when subjects are in proximity without contact.

Find out about the Global Coherence Project.

Sustained positive emotions affect bodily functions. Thus, there are physiological correlates of positive emotion. This is called psychophysiological coherence. This mode, characterized by heart rhythm coherence, increased heart-brain synchronization and entrainment of diverse physiological oscillatory systems, is associated with increased emotional stability, improved cognitive performance, and a range of positive health-related outcomes. Additionally, individuals frequently report feelings of increased spiritual connectedness during psychophysiologically coherent states.

Through the use of tools and technologies that foster positive emotions and psychophysiological coherence, individuals can effectively initiate a repatterning process, whereby habitual emotional patterns underlying stress are replaced with new, healthier patterns that establish increased emotional stability, mental acuity, and physiological efficiency.

The heart generates the largest electromagnetic field in the body. The electrical field as measured in an electrocardiogram (ECG) is about 60 times greater in amplitude than the brain waves recorded in an electroencephalogram (EEG). The magnetic component of the heart's field, which is around 5000 times stronger than that produced by the brain, is not impeded by tissues and can be measured several feet away from the body with Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID)-based magnetometers. Clear rhythmic patterns in beat-to-beat heart rate variability are distinctly altered when different emotions are experienced. These changes in electromagnetic, sound pressure, and blood pressure waves produced by cardiac rhythmic activity are "felt" by every cell in the body, further supporting the heart's role as a global internal synchronizing signal.
